Laminar Air Flow is a sterile work table for doing inoculation activities on microbiological testing. Laminar Air Flow is a tool used in the preparation work of plant materials, planting, and transfer of plants from a bottle to another bottle in in vitro culture. This tool is named Laminar Air Flow Cabinet, because it blows sterile air continuously through the workplace so that the workplace is free of dust and spores that may fall into the media, the time of planting. The air stream comes from the air of the room drawn into the tool through the first filter (pre-filter), which is then blown out through a very fine filter called HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter), using a blower.
Laminar Air Flow (LAF) is used as an eseptic work room. The principle of imposing a room on the basis of airflow out with air contamination can be minimized.
In Laminar Air Flow, there are 2 kinds of filters:
1. Pre-filter, which uses the first filter against dust and rough objects. The pores are approximately 5 mm so that the efficiency can reach 95 mm for objects that ≥ 5 mm.
2. HEPA filter with pores 0.3 (m and located on the air exit field towards the work surface).
Pre-filter should be cleaned frequently with a vacum cleaner and should be changed once a year. However, HEPA filters are replaced after a check with a particulate count or with a device called a magnehelic gauge. Laminar air flow cabinet is equipped with a U.V. lamp, some are without U.V. In a laminar air flow cabinet that is not equipped with U.V. lamps, the blower must be run continuously even though the laminar air flow cabinet is not being used. This is done to maintain the cleanliness of the workspace in the laminar air flow. In laminar air flow equipped with U.V. lamp, it is recommended to turn on U.V. lamp. minimum 30 minutes before laminar air flow is used. When the water flow laminar is in use, U.V. should be turned off, while the blower is run. The blower on the laminar air flow cabinet equipped with U.V. lamps, run only when the laminar air flow is being used.
